When It’s Time to Plan a Funeral

Stanfill Funeral Home & Cremation understands how difficult losing a loved one can be. The grief and loss that comes with the death of a family member or loved one can make planning a funeral service seem like an impossible task. We have put together a list of common funeral service questions to help guide you as you process your grief and handle the many decisions that follow a death.

What Is a Funeral?

A funeral is a ceremony celebrating the life of a person following their death. It can be a religious or secular occasion meant to provide comfort and an opportunity for family and loved ones to mourn their loss. Many people plan out their wishes for their funeral prior to their death to make the process less burdensome for their loved ones. In the case of a sudden or unexpected death or non-planning, a funeral director can provide support in choosing the right kind of service for the family.

Why Do I Need to Have a Funeral?

A funeral service is a way for family and friends to gather and grieve together. While the details can be stressful and sometimes overwhelming, most people feel that a funeral service of some sort is a healing way to honor the dead and pay last respects with friends and family.

Why Should I Have a Public Viewing?

There are many reasons why public viewings can be a positive part of the grieving process. In many cultures, it is believed to be a necessary part of the life cycle by helping the bereaved accept the reality of death. Having a viewing is a personal decision that can only be made by you and your family, and we will honor your wishes and those of the deceased to aid you in your healing.

What Types of Funeral Services Are There?

Funeral services can range in type and depend on many factors, such as the wishes of the deceased, religious preferences, and family circumstances. Funerals are generally held in a place of worship or a funeral home; however, other types of services may be held in locations selected by the family. Funeral services can include one or more of the following types of services

  • Traditional funeral – private (family only) or public
  • Celebration of life or memorial service – typically do not have casket or urn present
  • Visitation, wake, or viewing – informal way for friends and family to offer condolences
  • Graveside service

The type of funeral service you choose depends entirely on your family and their wishes, as well as any last requests of the deceased.

What Is an Obituary Notice?

An obituary notice is an announcement published either in the newspaper or online to communicate the news of the death, as well as provide information about the services to be held. Some funeral homes provide a memorial/obituary page online as a part of their funeral services.

What Is Embalming?

Embalming is a process for preserving the body. It sanitizes the body and slows the decomposition process, making it possible for family members to view the deceased and say their goodbyes. Embalming can also help restore the appearance of a loved one after a traumatic accident or illness. This makes the experience a less traumatic one for the friends and family of the deceased.

What Do Funeral Directors Do?

Funeral directors are your point of contact for handling any details of your loved one’s death. They handle administrative tasks such as legal paperwork, transportation, funeral and final disposition of the body, and many other tasks. They are also caregivers, providing compassionate guidance and a listening ear as they guide you through both the details at hand and the grieving process. Funeral directors are trained to work with people through the stages of grief and can put you in contact with support services and other professionals to help you after the funeral services are over. They are there to support you during this difficult time, so if you have questions for your funeral director, don’t hesitate to ask.

What if I Cannot Afford Funeral Costs?

If your loved one did not set aside funds for funeral expenses, or you are unable to afford funeral costs, your funeral director may be able to suggest an organization that can help absorb the costs for final arrangements. Some funeral homes will also help with costs in order to ensure that the deceased receives a respectable burial.

How Much Does a Funeral Cost?

On average, funerals cost around $5,000, which includes all professional services, such as transfer of remains, embalming, funeral services, transportation, facility use, burial or entombment, and purchase of a casket or cremation.

Do I Need Embalming or a Viewing if I Choose Cremation?

If you choose cremation, embalming or having a viewing are not required unless you wish it. You can choose to have embalming and hold a viewing and even a funeral with a casket prior to cremation if that is your wish. Cremation takes place separately from a funeral and is part of the disposition of the body once the ceremonial aspects have occurred.
